Heritage Foundation – Luncheon Featuring Steve Forbes

2010  Author:
Danny Wettreich and Steve Forbes – Heritage Foundation Event November 2010

Danny Wettreich and Steve Forbes - Heritage FoundationOn November 18, 2010 at the Hilton Anatole, The Dallas/Fort Worth Committee for Heritage of which Danny Wettreich is the Chairman, hosted a panel discussion and luncheon featuring Steve Forbes. The Committee is the local affiliate of the Heritage Foundation which has over 700,000 members nationwide. Steve Forbes is Chairman and CEO of Forbes Media and Editor-in-Chief of Forbes Magazine, where his editorials appear in each issue under the heading “Fact and Comment.” A widely respected economic prognosticator, Mr. Forbes is the only writer to have been a four-time winner of the highly prestigious Crystal Owl Award, formerly given by U.S. Steel Corporation to the financial journalist whose economic forecasts for the coming year proved most accurate. The following is an excerpt from the opening speech given by Danny Wettreich.

“On behalf of the Dallas/Fort Worth Committee for Heritage… Welcome, and after a terrific panel discussion this morning, we are all looking forward to the remarks of Steve Forbes a great conservative and long time friend of Heritage.

For those of you new to Heritage, you will find a one-year complimentary membership card on your table. Just fill it out and leave it for our staff to collect and you will receive full membership benefits including a discounted rate for upcoming events, Heritage newsletters, issue briefings, and opinion surveys. Those who join at the President’s Club level are also invited to meetings in Washington with speakers like Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, and Lady Margaret Thatcher.

In case anybody was not paying attention… we just had an election. Didn’t we do well? Republicans took back the House and almost managed to take back the Senate. Conservatism is clearly in resurgence.

But as Winston Churchill said in 1942… and I quote, “this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.” end quote.

We can allow ourselves a moment of elation as the tide comes our way. But let us not lose our focus. It is not over yet. We have to put a true conservative in the White House. We have many legislative battles in front of us, and in particular we have to repeal the abomination known as Obamacare. Your continuing support is critical over the next few years.

However, the good news is that America has demonstrated that it does not want socialism. The American people have shown that they do not want corrupt and incompetent politicians.

Make no mistake, the Republican Party is on probation, and it has had better implement effective policies or the electoral pendulum could return us to the Nancy Pelosi Nightmare.

We continue to have many threats to the American way of life. Some threats are internal, and in many ways, self inflicted, like trillions of debt and unfunded liabilities. Some threats are external like terrorism and rouge states who pursue nuclear weapons.

We need new solutions. We need new leaders. We need less government spending, less debt, less taxes, less illegal immigration, less bureaucracy… and no more appeasement of our enemies.

We need more support for our military, more support for an energy policy that will make us self-sufficient, more judges who uphold the law, more politicians who believe in the principles of the Founding Fathers… free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense.

We get the chance every few years to throw the bums out. That’s good. But the fight for freedom goes on all year, every year… and that is why we need the Heritage Foundation.

If you are not yet a Heritage member… join us. There is much yet to do.”
